Choosing A TV Aerial

You may have a new TV or just moved home and need to have an aerial so you can get back to watching all your favourite programmes again, however, there is a lot to think about when choosing the right aerial for you home.TV Aerials Colwyn Bay come in all shapes and sizes including built in, indoor and external.

When looking for a TV aerial there are three main things to consider including: polarity, group and location.

Polarity

It may sound complex, but it really isn’t. Television is broadcast either horizontally-polarised or vertically-polarised which will depend on how your aerial is mounted. Horizontally-polarised need to be mounted flat whereas vertically-polarised need to be mounted on its side depending on the transmitter it is pointing towards.

Groups

An aerial can be manufactured to receive a specific range of frequencies which is better known as a grouped aerial. GroupedTV aerials Colwyn Bay can help boost reception to acquire more channels. However, with the introduction of 4G and 5G channels, we are seeing a squeeze in television services which are now using fewer channels.

You may find that your grouped aerial isn’t suitable anymore or is less effective due to the new frequencies being used and you may need to opt for a wide band aerial instead.

The best way to tell what the problem is for sure is to contact a professional aerial installer.

Location

Location is important when it comes to receiving the best signal possible for your television. The best place to put your aerial is at least 10 metres high and mounted outside without anything obstructing the aerial and transmitter. However, in some cases with areas with very good coverage you may be able to put your aerial in your loft. It is good to note though that you may lose some signal strength this way due to obstacles in the way of the receiver or because of the type of insulation that you have. Foil-backed insulation in newer homes can potentially block signal so it’s good to have a backup plan if that’s the case.

Indoor

You may be familiar with indoor portable aerials, more common with older television sets, however, they are still used today. Portable aerials come in two different varieties, mini replicas of outdoor aerials and wire loops. Looped aerials will perform the worst of the two and it is unlikely that you will get good reception as they aren’t directly pointed in the direction of the receiver. If your only option is to get an indoor portable aerial, opt for a mini replica which will do a much better job.
