Organic Wines are thought of as just a myth, but why are they classed as organic wines? The wines themselves are not organic winesactually organic and the bottles will never say they are. The name “organic wines” just means that the grapes used within the wines were organically grown. Organic Wines do still contain sulphites, although many resellers will claim that all organically grown wines are low in sulphite.

If great quality organic wine is what you are looking for then it is advisable to purchase wines that are produced in small quantities by small family run wineries. Smaller wineries take much more care when picking grapes and preparing wines compared to large wineries that use machines to produce their huge batches of wines. A great family run winery is Domaine Viret, situated in St Maurice just north of Chateauneuf du Pape.

Domaine Viret is a small, well respected winery that offers very high quality, naturally grown wines to the wine market. Their wines are made in small batches and are given much care from the moment the grapes are grown to the departure of their bottled beverages.

Two examples of wines that are produced by Domaine Viret are; La Coudee d’Or Blanc, a rich and full wine made with viognier, clairette, roussane and marsanne grapes. Not only is this wine organic and hand produced, it also has a very low count in sulphite.  Another great wine made by Domaine Viret is Mareotis, a rich and smooth wine made with Grenache and Syrah grapes.  Both these wines are regarded as Low Sulphite Wines.
