Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Companies UK

Non-destructive testing encompasses a family of inspection techniques that evaluate the integrity of materials, components, and structures without causing damage. NDT is a regulatory requirement in sectors including aerospace, nuclear, oil and gas, pressure equipment, and structural steelwork, and is widely used as a quality assurance tool in general manufacturing for detecting defects that could compromise performance or safety in service.

NDT Methods

Ultrasonic testing (UT) uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws and measure wall thickness in metals, composites, and plastics. Radiographic testing (RT) uses X-rays or gamma rays to produce images revealing internal defects in welds, castings, and assemblies. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) detects surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials using magnetic fields and iron particles. Dye penetrant inspection (DPI) reveals surface-breaking defects in any non-porous material using fluorescent or visible penetrant fluids. Eddy current testing detects surface and subsurface defects in electrically conductive materials without direct contact. Advanced methods including phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) and time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) provide detailed volumetric inspection with accurate defect sizing and characterisation for critical weld assessments.

Qualifications and Accreditation

NDT operators are individually qualified to BS EN ISO 9712 or the PCN certification scheme administered by BINDT, at Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 for each method. UK NDT companies serving safety-critical sectors hold UKAS accreditation to BS EN ISO/IEC 17025 for their inspection methods, and NADCAP accreditation is required for aerospace NDT work on behalf of major airframe and engine manufacturers.
